Combat

Combat

Mechanics

Combat works very similarly to D&D - it is turn-based on a square grid, and you have actions, bonus actions, and reactions. You control both yourself and any NPC combatant entities in your party. Each weapon has basic attacks anyone can use if equipped, then skills can add additional actions for their related weapons. Most actions cost stamina, which is a combat-only stat that represents how tired you get from each action. Stamina can be regenerated in combat with certain actions (e.g. catch breath), and is reset to max after combats.

Dungeons

Dungeons are a more end-game type content. They generally contain some of the rarer materials in the game (jewels and gems), as well as more difficult enemies which have rare and coveted drops. Dungeons are hidden locations which can't be found via normal exploring. Instead, they are found by investigating ruins while having sufficient knowledge of the specific language on those ruins (see gathering section for more on investigating ruins).

Dungeons open up a set time after being first discovered. After opening, players can compete to clear it. They consist of multiple floors in which you'll either fight PVE enemies or other player parties who are in the dungeon. Then, upon reaching the final floor, you will fight a PVE boss of that dungeon. If you win, the dungeon will disappear (other parties will be able to finish the floor they are currently on). It will then respawn after some time at a new location, and need to be discovered again by investigating ruins.

This creates a series of important jobs all tied to effectively exploiting dungeons:

Training

Many major cities have a training hall, which lets players practice combat using their current skills and gear without expending stats but also not gaining xp. Clearing levels in a training hall also unlocks new levels as well as one time rewards. Proving yourself here is often a good way to measure your overall combat strength, test out new attack patterns and strategies, and earn rewards.

Hunting

The tracking gatherable features don't give you an item, instead they spawn a location on the map only you can visit (not always with perfect accuracy) which contains an animal or pack of animals of some kind. Different skills can improve both the accuracy of your tracking, as well as detection of what kind of animal it is. Once you travel to this new location (which is only available for you), a combat encounter will start.

Some animals are predators and will attack you, and some are prey and will attempt to flee from you. Regardless, you can attempt to either kill them and take their corpses for harvesting resources, or you can attempt to capture them. Taming does not happen during these combats, so you'll need to capture and sedate the animal, then can attempt to domesticate it at a homestead location, or sell it. Un-domesticated animals can't walk with a player party and are instead just treated as items that take up a significant amount of carrying capacity. Some skills do let you domesticate outside of a homestead.

Encounters

These are discussed in more depth in the travel section, but to touch on them lightly, they are similar to hunting encounters except they occur randomly while traveling or exploring. Also, they generally will be hostile entities, including both predators and hostile NPCs. Occasionally they will be non-hostile NPCs you can interact with.
